IAWL Executive Director Addresses Law Society of Kenya Women's Breakfast

Diani, Kenya – August 13, 2025 – The Executive Director of the Institute for African Women in Law (IAWL), Prof. J. Jarpa Dawuni, participated in a panel discussion at the Women's Breakfast hosted by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) in Diani. The event, a cornerstone of the LSK's commitment to gender equality and empowerment within the legal profession, provided a platform for insightful discussions on advancing the role of women in law. Other panelists included former Deputy Chief Justice Dr. Nancy Baraza, Ms. Wangari Wamae, Former Group Executive Director, Equity Group Holdings Plc; Ms. Yvonne Okwara, Senior News Anchor, Citizen Television, and Ms. Anne Ireri, Executive Director, FIDA, Kenya. Ms. Irene Otto, Council Member of the LSK and Gender Committee Member, moderated the power-packed panel.
The panelists collectively underscored the critical importance of fostering an inclusive legal environment that empowers African women to excel and lead. Prof. Dawuni highlighted the Institute's ongoing efforts to provide high-level training for women in law, advocate for policy reforms, and build networks that support women lawyers across the continent.
The event was attended by over 200 participants who broke out in songs and dance as speakers came up to the stage. The fun and lighthearted atmosphere, set against the backdrop of a tropical stage, was the best platform for women to let their voices be heard, while they let their hair down to relax, unwind and recharge.
The breakfast gathering brought together prominent legal professionals, LSK members, and advocates for gender parity, all united in their dedication to advancing the status of women within the legal profession. The event concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and collaboration, setting the stage for future initiatives aimed at strengthening the position of women in the legal sector in Kenya and beyond.
